Insolvency Academic News: PhDs & CVA developments - Professor Walters and Dr Frisby commissioned by the Insolvency Service to investigate CVA outcomes

My copy of the Society of Legal Scholars' 'The Reporter' magazine has just arrived. It contains some interesting information on insolvency issues. In the Constituency news section it is reported that in October 2009, Professor Adrian Walters was appointed as an Honorary Member of the Chancery Bar Association - a considerable accolade for a non-barrister - in recognition of his "proven expertise in the fields of teaching and research in the Chancery sphere". It is also noted that in December 2009, with Dr Sandra Frisby of the School of Law, University of Nottingham, Professor Walters was commissioned by the government's Insolvency Service to conduct research on the outcomes of corporate [sic] voluntary arrangements. This new work on CVAs is keenly anticipated, especially as the whole area is currently up for reform and critique with the iminent publication of a consultation on CVA extension by the Insolvency Service. Keep your eyes peeled!

In other insolvency academic news it has been reported that Professor David Milman has succesfully supervised an Insolvency Practitioner to Ph.D completion. The Star (South Yorkshire) is reporting that:

"SOUTH Yorkshire debt expert Paul Moorhead is being hailed as
the only insolvency practitioner in the UK to be awarded a PhD in insolvency
law, by Lancaster University. The managing director of South Yorkshire
insolvency practice Moorhead Savage, who originally studied Business Law at the
University of Huddersfield, secured his doctorate after carrying out five years
of research into the use and development of Individual Voluntary Arrangements
since the were introduced by the 1986 Insolvency Act."The PhD was based on the
real experience of helping people and companies on a day to day basis and
in-depth research," said Paul, whose work was supervised by Professor David
Milman, who is co-editor of industry bible The Annotated Guide to Insolvency
Legislation."I have seen and read a lot of academic work which is often
difficult to translate into practical advice. What this latest qualification
allows me to do is bridge the gap between the academic and the practical." said
Paul."

Congratulations to Dr Moorhead!
